Biography

I am a typeface and graphic designer from Greece. I studied Typeface Design at the University of Reading and greek and latin palaeography in Athens. Before going to Reading I studied Graphic Design at the Technological and Educational Institute (ATEI) of Athens. During this time, I worked in advertising which helped me develop an interest in the use and shapes of greek letterforms. My particular interest lies in the history of the greek script and the design of greek typefaces that represent our modern times whilst integrating the long history of the greek script itself. Eva Masoura and I have formed Naiada Typo Studio doing typeface design as well as graphic design. I am also collaborating with the Greek Font Society, while acting as the country delegate of Greece for ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale).

The Friends of St Bride Library fourth annual conference

In this year's conference themed 'Temporary Type' I was happy to have been invited to explore the interesting topic of typeface semantics. That is, the indirect messages that typefaces may convey to readers. Scientific studies asserting that typefaces do convey indirect messages to readers prior to the activation of the meaning of the written word itself were presented, as well as studies demonstrating that typefaces interact with peripheral elements of advertisments thus affecting the semantic cues evoked by them. A study aiming at providing a more systematic approach on identifying specific typeface design characteristics in correlation to specific impressions was also presented, among others. The presentation aimed at suggesting that a further investigation on this quite interesting topic is needed, and an example of the results that such a study would have were presented using as an instance graphological claims applied onto typefaces.

I am very happy to have been informed that more people are also interested in this, and I look forward with anticipation the results of their studies.

HYPHEN - Robert Granjon and his Greek types

In the 2005 volume of Hyphen a typographic forum, my article 'Robert Granjon and his Greek types' has been published. Granjon, one of the most eminent typefounders of his time, has greatly contributed to Greek typography. His successful Greek typefaces have been distributed thoughout Europe thus satisfying a great demand at the time for Greek types following the fashion of the Grecs du Roi. This article examines the types cut by Robert Granjon.
